here was unanimous support on Wednesday evening (24 July) for a motion calling on Folkestone & Hythe District Council to declare a climate and ecological emergency and reduce its carbon emissions to net zero by 2030.

The motion, debated by full council in the midst of a sweltering heatwave, was tabled by Green Party councillor Georgina Treloar and seconded by Labour’s Connor McConville.

Conservative councillors, supported by UKIP and an Independent, amended the motion to send the matter to the council’s scrutiny and oversight committee but measures in the motion, including committing to achieving zero net carbon by 2030, remained in place..
